From: http://www.usanewstime.com/tracyeinny-blogshop-143.php
In Conversation with Jeannie Pang, Tracyeinny

With a few thousand blogshops in Singapore alone, it’s hard to stand out from the crowd. Tracyeinny manages to do that and is now one of the more popular blogshops in Singapore. We hear from one of the co-founders, Jeannie Pang and hear her thoughts on the business behind Tracyeinny.

What is Tracyeinny?

Tracyeinny offers women apparel that is inspired by the moment and inspired by our passion. It is a joint partnership between two cousins: Jeannie Pang and Pamela Goi. Both are graduates and doing this full-time.
Are all your items are designed and manufactured by Tracyeinny?

Currently we don’t design or manufacture our products ourselves. In an average month, we churn out about 200-250 designs. We try to update two collections in a week and each collection has about 30-40 designs.

What is the motivation behind building this business?

Initially was mostly about our passion for shopping and clothes. But now our passion has turned into a full time job. Money is always a strong incentive to keep us going.

Any figures to share? Eg, no. of people on your mailing list? No. of items sold since opening your business? No. of pageviews? No. of visitors on your website? Feel free to share whatever you are comfortable with.

Number of pple in our mailing list is about 15,000. And our new domain, Tracyeinny.com.sg has been live for about 1.5 weeks and so far we have about 78,513 hits. To date, including our old LiveJournal site,

Tracyeinny has attracted more that 1.9 million unique visitors and counting.

What is your biggest satisfaction in this business so far?

Biggest joy is to be recognized for our efforts. For one of our jacket designs, we managed to sell over a 1,000 pieces. So whenever we see someone wearing our jacket and we go up and asked, they would say tracyeinny and we would be beaming with pride.

If you have a wish for something to happen in order to help your business, what would you wish for? Eg, Singpost to have a tracking system for items sent? Internet banking to be more effective in some way? Mainstream media to cast blogshops businesses in a better light?

Singpost for now is quite an efficient portal to deliver mails. To have a complete tracking system also means that the postage would definitely increase and pass on to customers. We strongly advise customers to opt for registered mail. But here at Tracyeinny, we have a strong recording system. Customers are reassured that we do help them track their mails. We do call up the post office to enquire and consistently track their lost packages. 99% of our packages do not go missing.

Interview with Kiki Chen

From: http://yourshoppingkaki.blogspot.com/2009/10/getting-to-know-room-8008.html

Do you know who is Kiki Chen?

With one of the most recognisable faces in the online shopping community, Kiki Chen is the owner, model and photographer behind Room 8008. :D This is the blogshop that shoppers swarm over every Sunday night for their previews - where you get first dibs at discounted rates - and then Monday night for their official collection launches!

This is the blogshop that other blogshop owners shop at! ;) The joke on the grapevine is that all you have to do is check out that customer list on the sidebar of Room 8008, and you've practically got the yellow pages on the online shopping community. :D

And there's little wonder why.

Complete with exclusive sneak peak at their upcoming updates (see: photos in this blog post!) and latest items still available, this is one feature interview that you can't miss!

Amazing photographs. A gorgeous model. The fun-loving personality of the entrepreneur behind it. And of course, a long list of loyal and beloved customers - well, they're more than just customers ...

They're roommates.

Let's get to know the woman who came up with the magical concept of roommates congregating in Room 8008 every weekend for some power-shopping!

Q&A with Kiki Chen
Owner of
Room 8008

  • YSK: Who are the people behind Room8008? :)
  • Kiki: Room8008 is handled all by myself...alone (sob sob) an old woman ^^ i am a big blur queen who likes to do something crazy, something that people never thought i will do but i do it ^^ i'm a dummy for online and the stuff call computer, i even use one month to find out what is blog and how to post up the picture in blog, i like to chill out, y so serious rite ^^ but starting this blog make me learn a lot of stuff , especially my EQ, i have a hot temper and low self esteem person, but with room i try to handle all the problem by myself of coz without throwing temper toward my customer ^^
  • YSK: Tell us the story of how Room8008 began. What inspired you to start this blogshop?
  • Kiki: room 8008 began with 4 silly gal, like to hang out around after class ^^ ha hahaa we r uni opssssss id college friend, ya ya actually the room8008 is our secret gathering place.. everytime when we feeltired or wanna skip class we will meet in that room and began chit chat, gossip and talk about our dream idea and exchange info hahahhaha, but now all off we already graduate and work in different field so when i decidde to start the blog i was thinking that what name shud i put then room 8008 just pop in my head ^^ coz i was thinking to memorise those moment hanging with them ^^ and maybe i can find another soul mate here ^^ that y i din call my customer is customer or client or buyer, I CALLED THEM ROOMATES / ROMMIES fell more closer and intimate ^^ my purpose open this blog not all is for profit , i have my own company so i have stable income ^^ beggining is for fun but lately i become passionate toward fashion, i feel happy when roomates like my collection (mean i have my taste in fashion) hahaha u cannot image how touching i was when i saw my roomates wearing the cloth that she buy from me and tell me how lovely they are... *(we r bump in to in pavillion) ^^

  • i remember got one gal beg me ( u see beg me ok) for letting the dress for her, then i agree in the end (acc the dress is need to pass to other waiting list punya) and she wan cod in 8.30am morning i agree to cause she need urgently but when i reach the cod place tomorrow morning she din turn up, i call she din pick up,, i call many time she directly turn off the HP, i wait her there for almost 45 min, sigh.... i nearly cry there.. damn scary the street is empty no shop open just left me and few foreign worker... gosh
  • YSK: Room8008 is definitely one of the most estalished and successful blogshops in Malaysia. What words of wisdom do you have for newcomers to the industry? And what would you say has been the secret to your success?
  • Kiki: A dummy like me also can start and pursuit my dream , dun care what other ppl say, if u think u can do it just try, but pls take note starting ablog is not like a piece of cake , c'mon where got so easy, u need to maintain and reply hundred a mail a day, pppl will scold u and bias and say many bad thing a bout u n ur blog, u need to be strong .. a good start indeed...
  • YSK: You mentioned there's a question your customers often ask you - maybe you can answer it here for all of us to read: How come you don't usually smile in your pics? :D
  • Kiki: ah ya... if u know me personally u will know that i always like to smileeeeeeeeeeeee, laugh and joking person, i din smile while taking picture is becoz i using self timer to take it, all the pic i taking my selft, i am the hair dresser, make up artis, photogtapher (all in one) so i cannot stand my smile till 10 sec then the camera just clicksssssss.. i will die to hold my smile ^^so roomates be understand sikit ya ^^

Interview With Min, Little Red Heels

Interview With Min, Little Red Heels

March 25, 2009 by Gwendolyn Regina T

LRH Team
Dealing virtually with clients does not mean that Min does not try to add a personal touch to the interaction. Always typing and responding to emails from clients with a smile on her face, Min believes that these smiles can be subtly communicated through text. We listen to Min as she speaks about Little Red Heels, an online blogshop that she started with her friend.
What is Little Red Heels?
Little Red Heels can be found at www.iloveLRH.com. We sell apparels mostly, and whatever interesting finds we stumble across. But we like to think that we are selling a concept, a style, rather than just apparels. It was started by Min, an NUS graduate from Communications and New Media, and Zi, a SMU graduate of Accountancy, both 24.
All your items are designed and manufactured by Little Red Heels? How long is the design cycle for any one product?
Not all items are designed and manufactured by us, but we do have items that are exclusively manufactured by us. The design cycle ranges from about one to three months.
Do you manufacture them locally?
Nope. We manufacture overseas.
What is the motivation behind building this business?
It started out as fun and of course, a common passion for fashion. We kind of just stumbled into this, and started growing Little Red Heels to what it is today.
What are the difficulties that you have faced so far?
We started out when online businesses weren’t such commonplace. It is definitely interesting to see how the market has grown with many new players joining to share the pie. It isn’t really difficulty but more than like a challenge how you can outdo yourself and your competitors to stay ahead – through innovation and creativity.
LRH Screenshot
Blogspot, livejournal, wordpress, weebly, your own .com — there are many ways to set up a blogshop or store. What is your own preference? Why? What experiences can you share with us about using some or all of these?
We started from livejournal, and I think there is a certain charm about LJ that online shoppers still like. We decided to move over to .com in 2008. The core reason being we believe it can bring higher efficiency and hence, better customer service for our customers – just so we can focus our energy to more worthy causes rather than sieving though comments (which is really tedious, believe me). There is also a lot more flexibility when it comes to design and execution for .com.
Any figures to share? Eg, no. of people on your mailing list? No. of items sold since opening your business? No. of pageviews? No. of visitors on your website? Feel free to share whatever you are comfortable with.
We’ve definitely lost count of the number of items sold. It’s a lot I suppose, since we started from 2006.
Considering the large number of blogshops in Singapore, how do you differentiate yourself from others?
Exclusivity of the item is always important. No one likes to wear the same thing as the next person down the street. :) But above all, we believe in always innovating and keeping your concept fresh. That’s what we always do to stand out from the rest.
What is your marketing strategy? How do you try to obtain new customers?
It’s mainly through word of mouth, and that’s the advantage of the online channel. Everything is as convenient as a click.
How do you handle customers who are practically faceless to you? Any good or bad experiences to share?
It sounds bizarre perhaps, but I always type my emails with a smile on my face. I think that smile gets communicated through the text and the customers will be able to feel it. Faceless is not an issue – it’s more like a conscious effort to inject a personal touch and words of concern to the customers. Thankfully, our experiences with customers have been mostly positive. For those that are not, just be extra tactful and try putting yourself in that customer’s shoes and imagine why she/he is reacting in such a manner. Normally, you will be able to empathise. They are not that unreasonable.
LRH Screenshot2
What is your biggest joy/satisfaction/achievement in this business so far?
The biggest satisfaction comes each time when we receive a nice comment or a positive feedback. We do have a direction we want Little Red Heels to move in, and those words are reaffirmation that we are doing the right things.
What is the biggest disappointment/negative experience in this business so far?
Disappointments and negative experiences are part and parcel. You will get affected and that’s rightful ‘cause it shows that this business do mean something to you. More importantly, it’s the lesson you derive from that disappointment and grow from there.
If you have a wish for something to happen in order to help your business, what would you wish for?
Okay, this is a tough one. There are many things running through my mind now. If I can be more selfish, it will be to fast forward a few years down the road and in knowledge that Little Red Heels will be one of those online businesses that is still standing strong and doing rock fine.
What would you advise entrepreneurs just starting out?
Sometimes it’s all about following the heart. Do what your passion leads you.
Thanks, Min. Good luck with Little Red Heels!

In Conversation with Jeannie Pang, Tracyeinny

An interview with a couple of Singaporean online entrepreneurs

In Conversation with Jeannie Pang, Tracyeinny

Tracyeinny - Jeannie and PamelaWith a few thousand blogshops in Singapore alone, it’s hard to stand out from the crowd. What are the difficulties that you have faced so far? Technical issues like setting up your own .com, hiring programmers? Business processes like handling money? Legal issues?
Difficulties initially were time constraint. We had to juggle work/school and maintaining the website to our best abilities.

To streamline our business processes is a continuous process. Here and there we try to incorporate new systems to streamline our work to improve efficiency. We do hire someone to take care of our accounts/packages/pettycash etc.

Blogspot, livejournal, wordpress, yourowndomain.com – there are many ways to set up a blogshop or store. What is your own preference? Why? What experiences can you share with us about using some or all of these?
In my opinion, the only reason for you to choose your internet platform is your target audiences.

For us, we started out with LiveJournal. Through mainly word of mouth, we have established ourselves. Recently we migrated to a .com.sg and the reason for this is because our LiveJournal site was not able to efficiently manage our growing customer base. We had gmail account for mailing list and some of our emails constantly went missing (hotmail). However, to allow for a smooth transition for our customers, we made our website similar in look as LiveJournal.

Any figures to share? Eg, no. of people on your mailing list? No. of items sold since opening your business? No. of pageviews? No. of visitors on your website? Feel free to share whatever you are comfortable with.

Considering the large number of blogshops in Singapore, how do you differentiate yourself from others?
We pride ourselves with a good system. We record every thing step by step. To customer’s order to when customer’s order are out of our house. We file our registered slip and consistently record down every package. Service and a good solid system allows us to be differentiated.

What is your marketing strategy? How do you try to obtain new customers?
The truth is, we never really market ourselves extensively. Everything is done by word-of-mouth.

Tracyeinny collection sample
How do you handle customers who are practically faceless to you? Any good or bad experiences to share?
Faceless or with a face is the same. We have to response to their needs and demands to our best of our ability. In any industry, there are definitely good and bad experiences. It is with such experiences that we learn and move on. It is with these experiences that we improve our system and management.

Pineberry Boutique offers unique handmade fashion and accessories

This business began as a small blogshop operation and has now grown to become a full fledged brick and click business.

Note how the business is really an extension of the owner, born of her ideas and personal interest.

Pineberry Boutique offers unique handmade fashion and accessories

KUCHING: Some of us have received gifts over the years that we still hold on to until this very day.

ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT: Chiang sitting at her boutique's unique counter that resembles a quaint shop window.

More often than not, the gift is of sentimental value, even more so if it is handmade; be it a card or an intricately-knitted sweater.

For Chiang Khai Ching, proprietress of Pineberry Boutique, this is a feeling she wishes to evoke through her artistic creations.

What started out as a clicks-only business recently through social networking media such as Facebook and blogs, has turned into a full-fledged business for Chiang.

“My interest in fashion is actually down to my mother. Since I was a child, I’ve always dreamt of putting my ideas to fruition, partly influenced by her interest in sewing and crocheting garments,” she enthused.

Currently, her boutique located at the third floor of the newly-opened OneJaya Lifestyle Mall at Jalan Song here offers a multitude of her personal creations in the form of clothes and also accessories.

She explained that her setup costs of renovating the place and procuring inventory ran up to approximately RM30,000.

HANDMADE CREATIONS: A sample of the multiple handmade creations available at Pineberry Boutique.

In addition to the handcrafted clothing items and accessories such as bags and ornamental decorations, Chiang also saw potential in the conventional retail model of boutiques.

However, her boutique’s tailored system was such that she only brought in limited quantities of these items as she wanted her clientele to be different from others.

“My aim is to provide everyone one of my customers a distinctive product. For example, there will only be a particular style of blouse that will be on display. Even though the style may be the same, the size and colour will not,” Chiang stated.

This was a further extension of her core offerings as she travelled regularly and kept up with the latest fashion trends to understand the scope of her customers’ needs.

While her shop was mainly aimed at young female adults, there had been requests on the part of her customers for other market segments.

“We are taking things one step at a time, as we feel that quality is of the essence where the business is concerned. We want to create an identity synonymous with the Pineberry vision of quality products, where each individual can flaunt their personality styles with our inimitable lineup of merchandise,” Chiang concurred.
For that matter, she divulged that her inventory turnover was within a period of three to four months.

“This ensures that our lineup of products are always fresh and appealing. Surely, fashion trends change over time and we must evolve with the times,” said Chiang.

On the issue of online business ventures, she was of the opinion that the Sarawak market had much to catch up on.

“Most of my customers from the online segment are from Peninsular Malaysia. The community there is much more comfortable with the idea of buying things online.

“On the other hand, Sarawakians are much more cautious and believe in the tried-and-tested ethos of physically inspecting the goods before purchase,” Chiang added.

Thus, she agreed that a brick-and-click presence was beneficial to her business.

For the benefit of outstation customers, Chiang provided courier services.

“Above all, I want to inspire any young entrepreneurs out there, that if you set your heart to do something, it is not impossible.

“It may be a rough journey at first, but with enough conviction and effort, one’s dreams can be realised,” she said.

Chiang also counted her blessings as her parents were fully supportive of her business venture.

Pineberry Boutique’s creations can be found online at http://pineberryboutique.blogspot.com and http://thread-whispers.blogspot.com.

Alternately, one can e-mail pineberryboutique@yahoo.com, call Chiang at 016-8969530 or join Pineberry Boutique’s Facebook page.

Interview with a blogshop owner

This interview with a blogshop owner was taken from The Sun website: http://www.thesundaily.com/article.cfm?id=52327

The interview reveals motivations to start a business, which is has great SIMILARITIES with what I have found from previous interviews (esp. Mylo and Athena).

In these cases, the entrepreneurial spirit arose out of a desire to provide what was not currently available in the market (price deficiencies), and a business based on self-production/self-design of the products.  In this instance, it is also likely that the entrepreneur's passion has driven the venture.

Thus we establish three major themes underlying these businesses: PASSION à ENTREPRENEURIALIZING à MODELLING A BLOGSHOP BUSINESS.
Blogshop address: http://the-lollipop-house.blogspot.com/

Lee’s latest design of fabric bracelets with
charms.
When you think of lollipops, it will most likely remind you of those mouth-watering memories of consuming colourful flavoured candies religiously when you were younger. Those enticing fruity flavours and glossy-looking glazed candies never fail to tempt you into buying a stick or two. If you did not manage to resist those temptations, you would probably fall in love with these handmade accessories made of glass tiles, looking almost like lollipops.

Having a vibrant appeal, the-lollipop-house.blogspot.com burst of all things colourful – be it glass tile necklaces, rings, fabric-made head bends, bracelets and even bookmarks. Although Christine Lee, 30, did not have a designing background, the accounts and finance graduate was determined to fulfil her search for glass tile ear-rings.

"I was looking for a particular type of ear-rings in Malaysia and couldn’t find them. Once I did stumble upon several varieties at other blogshops, but found that they were too expensive. Then I thought, why not I make my own! Everything just fell into place as I was also looking for opportunities to venture into something different from my job nature as an operations personnel with the accessories division under FJ Benjamin," explained Lee.

In Lee’s collection of glass tile necklaces and rings, you will be able to find a tinge of quirkiness and a breath of fresh design direction apart from the usual costume jewellery which are available at your local accessories outlet. Inspired by people and her surroundings, images which are used to complete these glass tile pieces are often based on her random musings.

"The images could be of anything and everything fun. I’ve received feedback saying that some of the images used actually manage to relate personally to their characteristics. There are also images which I’ve purchased from stock image companies. I have also made some which are for causes such as breast cancer awareness and positive messages written onto paper and created as one of the images," added Lee.

Christine Lee’s accessories collection is inspired
by daily musings.
Making a purchase is less of a hassle as Lee’s accessories are tagged with prices and are inclusive of postage charges. As for Malaysian buyers, postage is free of charge.
"At the moment, I am also exploring the possibilities of making accessories out of fabric. So far, I’ve done bracelets and necklaces," expressed Lee.

When asked if costume jewellery retailers are competitors of her business, Lee stated that she is confident that handmade accessories possess more character than ready-to-wear pieces.

"When you purchase something at the boutique or store, chances are you might get something which someone already have. However at the-lollipop-house, you can find something more personalised and you don’t have to worry that someone else has the same piece as I only do one-off pieces," added Lee.

Stylish yet affordable, the pieces of statement accessories are priced from RM12.90 to RM29.90. Simple customisation is also available at the blogshop.

Characteristics of a Blog Shop Owner

As entrepreneurial entities, blogshops are personified by their owners.

Here is a good article about what it takes to be a blogshop entrepreneur.

From the Safe Blogger site: http://www.safeblogshopper.com/2010/06/01/featured-articles-for-blogshop-owners/characteristics-of-a-blog-shop-owner.html

Characteristics of a Blog Shop Owner

June 1, 2010 by safeblogshopper

What’s your vision? Do you recognise commercial opportunities, knowing where you would want to take your blog shop business, and what your blog shop business would look like. Are you ambitious – do you really desire to see this happen? Without vision, how can you plan to get there, and then know when you’ve arrived?

Characteristics of Successful Blog Shop Entrepreneurs
-A successful entrepreneur is motivated by personal and family considerations.
-Desire for independence and a strong sense of initiative are usually characteristics of a successful entrepreneur.
-Entrepreneurs are dedicated to their businesses.
- Commited to their business.
- With pleasing personality.
- Passion for their business.
- Knows what his/her customers want.
- Must ahve leadership qualities.

Leadership characteristics include:
-A realistic but clear vision of a goal and means of achieving that goal.
-The ability to communicate this vision to others and to believe that the goal is worth achieving.
-Leaders are able to assume responsibility for risk.

You should:

-Do what you enjoy
What you get out of your business in the form of personal satisfaction, financial gain, stability and enjoyment will be the sum of what you put into your business. So if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, in all likelihood it’s safe to assume that will be reflected in the success of your business–or subsequent lack of success. In fact, if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, chances are you won’t succeed.

- Plan everything
Planning every aspect of your home business is not only a must, but also builds habits that every home business owner should develop, implement, and maintain. Business planning also serves a second function, which is having your goals and how you will achieve them, on paper.

- Project a positive business image
You have but a passing moment to make a positive and memorable impression on people with whom you intend to do business.

-Get to know your customers
One of the biggest features and often the most significant competitive edge the blog shop entrepreneur has over the larger competitors is the he can offer personalized attention.

- Project a positive business image
